NIXON WALK REVISITED

I’ve got some solo shows out East to announce. I know the following might be one of the cruelest things someone can say to an audience, but here it goes: I might be trotting out some new songs. So there. You’ve been warned. And also there’s some Mission Express festival dates and the like come summer. Dig in below.

Meanwhile, here in San Francisco, I’m still checking the surf report every morning out of habit, even if a shoulder injury has kept me out of the water. I’m back to spending my mornings doing the Nixon Walk along Ocean Beach. You know the walk: Hands behind my back, slow and pensive. Here’s a PRO TIP: If you want to feel like you’re starring in your own AARP commercial, if that’s your thing, try the Nixon Walk on Ocean Beach in the morning. Maybe we can even walk together, side by side, not saying anything, brooding about the Washington Post and New York Times and how they have it out for us. (Sound familiar?)

Meanwhile, me and klip have been pushing around the songs and script for Temple Beautiful: The Musical (that’s not a typo), which has been in the works for going on six years believe it or not. (Actually, the script is called a libretto, but we can never say “libretto” without having to look it up afterward to make sure we’re using it right.) Last November we had another workshop culminating in a one-night-invitation-only showcase at PianoFight (former site of the original Original Joes) in the heart of the heart of the Tenderloin. With Clay David producing and Emilie Whelan directing nine, count-em nine actors, and a five-piece band led by Matt Jaffe (with yours truly out in the audience soaking it all in). A lit-up crowd gave the performance a Standing O. Excitement in the air. (Confusion too!) So, in the spirit of Save That Date, you heard it here first. We’re gearing up for three performances at the Alcazar Theatre in late August. Get ready to cash in those airline miles(!). More on that to come.

Meanwhile, for those of you who made it out - or didn’t - to our annual Austin residency at the Continental Club, we’ve got commemorative souvenir T shirts and posters for sale in our on-line store: theconnextion.com/chuckprophet

P.S.: ONE MORE PRO TIP FOR THE ROAD: Pour a jar of salsa into a bag of tortilla chips and shake it up. [It’s like a salad but without all the annoying salad stuff.]

THE HEADSTOCK DOCTOR IS IN

We had a great time out there with more than a few sold out shows. Any time we return to a city and there’s more people than the time before…We ask for extra foam on our coffee, pure cream, hold the guilt.

We’ve got a few Mission Express shows coming right up. And it all starts at The Continental Club in Austin. Two nights at the Continental Club in Austin. And dig this: EARLY SHOW AND LATE SHOW ON SATURDAY. We’re always excited to play in Austin at our home away from home, the Continental Club. We all dig playing the Continental. Three shows! And the plan is different set-lists each night.

Meanwhile, I might have a new career. As a surgeon.

Hear me out.

Sold out shows always feel good. But, the real good feeling. That came from the fact that I somehow repaired the broken headstock on my beloved Martin D-28 guitar. The same guitar purchased for me by China Records back in the year of who-knows-when. It was like a Ben Carson intervention of the divine moment. It was out of body. I was transformed. Into a gifted surgeon. Me, the guy whose wife loves to tell people she didn’t exactly win the lottery when it came to husbands with the handyman gene. Okay, I can barely open a can of tuna fish, but something came over me. Would you believe God guided my hands?

Me neither. (But that doesn’t mean it’s not true.)

So, after the Pittsburgh show there was a downright rowdy merch table party, and somebody stumbled up on the stage and KO’d my guitar. It was lying sprawled out facedown when the sound guy found it and said “I hate to be the bearer of bad news…” Then he held up my Martin D-28, snapped at the neck. Like a high-school baller’s collarbone. I sunk down to the lip of the stage.

Head in hands.

Then something came over me. I was possessed. It’s like when you read about the 85-pound-mother who picks up a car her child is trapped under. I started running around the club yelling, “OK, I need two C-clamps, a bicycle inner tube, and some rubbing alcohol, stat!” Naturally, everyone ignored me.

Then the sound guy, who looked like he hadn’t slept for a week said, “I might have a capo somebody left behind.”

Then Denise P. piped up about a 24-hour Walmart out by the interstate. (It really does take a village.)

Now, I don’t want to digress, but have any of you been to a 24-hour Walmart on the outskirts of Pittsburgh after midnight lately? It was just me and a couple tweakers roaming the auto parts aisles. The tweakers were friendly. Helpful even. “Dowling? You’ll find that in the Arts and Crafts aisle, bro.”

I found the C-clamps, some dowling, some straight-up wood glue, some Gorilla snot that had a different color and texture and looked like it might be stronger than the wood glue for no good reason. I also found some rope in place of the bicycle inner tube to protect the guitar from the clamps.

Back at the hotel, I washed my hands and got down to business. When I was done gluing and clamping, I gently set it next to the heater. Thinking that might make the glue dry faster. I sat up for a while just looking at it. The next morning we laid the patient flat out on the backseat of the rental car and headed for Columbus.

When we arrived, I took the cast off, strung it up with a new set of strings, and lo-and-mother-loving-behold. Success! You can send me your broken headstocks, but be warned: I’m already a month behind. Our living room is wall-to-wall headstocks. The Headstock Doctor Is In!

PS: You’re probably wondering: HEY, who the blazes is Ben Carson? I’m referring to that crazy conservative black guy who ran for president. Who now works for Trump now. Get it? No? Because he was (or is?) a surgeon, and was and an uber-Christian. Maybe it’s kind of an obscure reference. Whatever.

SHAKESPEARE

Today Stephie and I are flying out to Texas for a couple of duo gigs. A couple of duo gigs? That sounds like New Math.

ANYHOO: Looking forward to getting out there and playing and maybe catching a bookstore along the way.

So, I worked on a Warren Zevon record once. Life’ll Kill Ya. It was a challenge. But, I found I did have one thing in common with Zevon: We both had the ability to sit in a Barnes and Nobles for hours at a time. Hear me out. When you’re out there crossing and criss-crossing this great nation, those bookstores just off the freeway? However corporate, they’re some kind of oasis. Sometimes I just find myself there. With no memory of pulling off the highway. I once sat in a Borders in Omaha from the time it opened until it closed. People came and went. Kids doing homework. I got to know the staff. Got hired to restock. Got fired. It was a full day. That’s one thing I remember about the Zevon session. Everywhere I turned in the studio, all over the place - in the bathroom even, there’d be a book laying open. Some Russian novel or whatever.

I mean, these aren’t great bookstores. Nobody is on a rickety ladder wearing a cardigan sweater like in the movies. Expecting strip mall chain stores to have that dusty vibe is too much to ask. The vibe where as soon as you walk in you’re thinking you might find something mind blowing. A book could even fall off a shelf into your hands. (I saw that in a movie once. On a plane.) I mean, you’re in a strip mall. Get real.

But still, I can’t explain it.

After Warren Zevon died, there was a documentary. And I think Warren said [paraphrasing as usual]: “We love to buy books because we believe we’re buying the time to read them.”

Wouldn’t that be nice.

Anyways, thanks for being on this newsletter. And staying in touch. For me it beats going around from city to city with a staple-gun hanging posters all over the place. And it’s better for the planet too.

Onwards,

PS: In a few weeks, the East River Truckers [Yours Truly, Charlie Sexton, Vicente Rodriguez, Steve Adams), will be heading over to Spain to perform all of Some Girls. Yes, THAT record. Which is practically Shakespeare by now. (Maybe he even co-wrote it through a séance or something.) Well, at least it’s not a double LP like London Calling. When the promoter reached out about doing it we had just played the Continental in Austin with Charlie. And I said something like, “If Charlie does it… ” Charlie was brief and to the point. I could barely get out the words when he said, “I’m in.” We both agreed we were going to need a really great drummer. So we’re thrilled to have Vicente in the engine room. More on all that later.

PPS: Another broken rule for the newsletter: no outside promo. Just this once, in the aftermath of furious behind the scenes negotiations: Have a novel inside you waiting to get out? Or is it already in the drawer, half-finished? Poems, manuscripts, laundry lists ... klip is taking all comers at https://www.lipschutzediting.com/ There’s even a quote from me there that I don’t remember writing, but that’s another story.
