Heatstroke shenanigans

Folks,

Dispatching from the back of the van where I keep picking up and putting down a copy of Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas. I thought it was lost. I found it rolled up in another band’s t-shirt. [Road swag.] Not the best pillow by the way.

Friends! If I may be so bold. We’re rolling like a Greyhound with the passengers asleep on our way to Boston for a 2 night stand at the Lizard Lounge. [We’ve invited Peter “Take-out-your-false-teeth-baby, I wanna-suck-on-your-gums” Wolf to come down. Who knows? He might make it.]

Somebody once said (maybe it was me) that touring is like “summer camp in bars.” Maybe so. BUT, let me tell you this: it’s not all cable TV and Starbuck’s Oatmeal, people! [Although the oatmeal isn’t bad, I’m still surprised by some of the shady characters on cable TV.] Some of this touring stuff is heroically hard work. [If this is camp, where’s my sound check badge?]

Just last night we were three quarters of the way through our 90 minute set in the thick 107 degree Springfield, Land of Lincoln heat, when I looked over to Kevin T. on bass and didn’t recognize him. His eyes were empty; he was like a cable TV zombie or something. Sweating like a lesbian in a guitar shop. After the show, Kevin turned to me and said, “I started feeling really cold up there…”

Oh shit. That’s heatstroke, right? Seriously, this heat blows. I’m like, “Sun, blow me!”

I was struggling pretty bad during the gig too, having a hard time forming recognizable words introducing the songs and the band. James was like, “Dude, I thought you were having a stroke.”

Heatstroke shenanigans aside, the show was a blast. A hot blast. And Jans Project, John Paul Keith, and Jack Oblivion all made it happen.

Now, I know I’m prone to exaggeration and I easily admit that I’m 1/3 bullshit. [But as you know, 33 and a third RPM is my old stomping ground, people]. So continuing back through my journal here, it occurs to me that maybe this isn’t the best time to grow a beard, with the heat and all. [I try not to let myself go. But I will say this about beards: Bob Dylan made some great music after he grew one.]

WHATEVERZ: There’s more to life than sexy vampires with personal trainers. There has to be, right? So come out to a gig and see for yourself. We look forward to glaring at you from the bandstand.

Wait. One. More. Thing. While you’re at the gig, swing by the merch table. We’ve got a brand spanking 7” of me and James and Rusty Miller’s instrumental group El Depravo. Some Link Ray inspired tracks we cut with JJ Wiesler. It’s totally gap toothed guitar noir. And it’s pretty cool. The cover art by Michael Gabriel is worth the price of admission alone.
