Hey there,

This Saturday, October 27, along with a host of luminaries including Ronnie Hawkins, David Johansen, M. Ward, Dave Alvin (and more!), yours truly will be performing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland for the Chuck Berry tribute. Lemmy will be there too. THAT Lemmy. Lemmy Kilmister [I didn’t know he had a last name, but there you go]. Yep, It’s crazy – I know it. Chuck Berry will be there. It will get weird. Consider that a guarantee. Or your browser back. I’ll try to bring a camera.

And…Part II of the Temple Beautiful walking tour video directed by our main man Darrell Flowers is now up and running on the YouTube. Folks, there’s still a six-foot square portrait of Red Man in my rehearsal studio that follows my every step with his bright eyes. If you’ve seen him lately - he always said he’d never die - please call our tip line.

So much excitement around here with The Giants I don’t know where to start. Just when it couldn’t get any worse for the Cardinals, the rain came down like a hammer on those poor red birds while The Giants hydroplaned right into the World Series. I flicked the channel and the talk turned to horses and bayonets. It was one of those kind of nights. Where you collapse and fall asleep in your clothes.

The Nick Lowe gigs and the Yep Roc 15th anniversary show were a total blast. Speaking of bayonets, I heard the kick off party was a barn-burner. Knowing the Fleshtones were in town burning it up, I had to call ahead to make sure the gig was still on. “Did the Fleshtones burn the city to the ground? Do we need someone to get Shelby Foote on the phone? Any truth to the rumor that the Redeye warehouse was looted of all its Nick Lowe swag?” When I got there the buildings were all standing and the crowd was on its knees waiting for Nick Lowe to tell them one more time what’s so funny ‘bout peace, love and understanding.

Finally, The Mission Express had a ball in Austin at our two-night stand at the Continental. The bottom line remains: Austin is a great place to eat a taco.

Finally and then some, speaking of Tacos . . . [Silly Rabbit, segues are for kids].

For the second year running, Peter Buck is putting on the Todos Santos Music Festival, a ten-day music event. The festival, presented by The Hotel California, is in Baja California (that’s in Mexico, I’m pretty sure), January 10-26, 2013. The Mission Express will be present and accounted for. Details to follow.

Onwards,

HARDLY STRICTLY BLUEGRASS

We want to take you where the funky grass grows. It’s true. I’m confirming the rumor I started. (This rumor spreading thing has really been working for me lately). We are indeed playing the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival this year.

We’re part of a great bill on the Conor Oberst stage. Also known as the Conor-Brings-Friends-for-Friday-Stage featuring: Simon Felice, Chuck Prophet & the Mission Express, Beachwood Sparks, Ben Kweller, Jenny Lewis (and Conor Oberst of course).

It’s on the Friday, so you’ll have to cut out of school at lunch or something. You will want to get there early and snag a sweet spot.

Please feel free to e-mail me if you want some original excuse to call in sick from work. I’ve got a million of ‘em! And they’re all fresh. “Sorry but I was up all night knitting” is one of my personal favorites. It’s a family show. So if you’re not totally bored with your dumb family by now, bring them along too.

And keeping with our tradition, we’ll be at the Makeout Room later that eve for our annual gig with special guests from out of town.

A couple other related disagreements:

It’s true. Me and homeboy klipschutz fell out many years ago over… guess what? Money. That’s right. Here’s an interview where klipschutz interviews himself and takes the piss out of himself – and me. And clears up that money thing.

Stay gold pony boys and girls,

Chuck

PS: Did you know Dr. Phil got his $100,000.00 custom car stolen out of a repair shop like the same day I got my guitar back. Are you gonna try and tell me those two things aren’t related? We’ll see if it comes back painted green.

THE GUITAR IS BACK

Here you have the timeline. No one took Bin Laden to the ground, but some true blue heroism went down all the same.

After Kara Johnson and Patrick Winningham came up with an action plan, they flyer’d every SRO on Market Street down through the 6th St. corridor and up into the ‘Loin.

This morning I got a cryptic text message from a guy who said we had a deal. I called Patrick, who took it from there. With Tom Heyman in tow (wearing a belt buckle the size of a turkey platter), he headed out for the hand-off, pockets stuffed with cash. They negotiated a meet-up at the Starbucks on 8th and Market - neutral territory. “Mike” showed up with a crumpled flyer instead of a corsage. After a few pleasantries were exchanged, another guy wheeled around the corner on roller blades - with both instruments strapped to his back! Where’s the film crew when we need ‘em? Patrick and Tom docked these two fine citizens two C-notes (or was it three?) for spray painting the bass lime green (fair is fair), and drove off with the guitars.

Hey, if “Mike” and the Roller Blade Man are high as fuck right now, God bless ‘em anyway, they did the right thing.

Again, big thanks to everyone for helping this old mouth breather get his guitar back. I’ve been beating myself up for leaving the guitar and Kevin’s bass in the van. I was tired and got sloppy. I was sick about it. This time I got a break, thanks to the love and support of so many people.

It’s crazy to think that Kara, my old high-school sweetheart and my oldest friend Patrick (and best man at our wedding) came to the rescue (along with all the rest of you). The two people in my life who’ve been there for me longer than that wandering guitar. Okay, enough typing from me. I’ve got to go sound check. We’re in Seattle tonight at the Sunset Tavern. Come on down. Who knows what trouble we’ll get into. I’m feeling good!

Love and kisses and broken fingers,

Stay gold Pony Boy,

Chuck
