Free song giveaway: Castro Halloween

Folks,

We’re giving a track away for Halloween because… well, I don’t know why… because we’re generous and it just seemed timely, that’s all!

It’s called Castro Halloween.

They say tricks are for kids…and phone sex is for adults, and Halloween is for preadolescents in Lady Gaga and Ghadafi masks. But one thing is for sure: everyone knows you can’t top the Castro Halloween for beautiful freaky weirdness.

Sign up for the mailing list and it’s yours.

KUSF, Lit Quake, solo gigs and more

Folks,

This Friday I’ll be at a Lit Quake event at the Make Out Room along with Dr. Frank Portman, Joel Selvin, Denise Sullivan, Richie Unterberger. Starts at 7:00 PM. I’ve been given 6 minutes to play, sing, read or work on that scarf I’m knitting for Stephie.

Next weekend Fri. Oct. 21st. will be epic. At the Rickshaw Stop. It’s a benefit for KUSF, and we’ll be playing all new songs from the forthcoming Temple Beautiful LP. AND. . .we’re backing Roy Loney for some songs. Roy! Loney!

A lot of us took KUSF for granted. But KUSF was more than Lollapalooza. More than Burning Man. It was 12 languages of diversity. It WAS San Francisco. Now it turns out USF may not have been in the right to sell it off. Fighting back requires money. A lot of people have volunteered their time and efforts. But they need all the money and awareness fit to print.

Don’t take my word for it. Read about the KUSF sale in the NY Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/28/us/28bcradio.html

For anyone emerging from a coma, R.E.M. threw in the towel. And yours truly took it harder than a solid state receiver circa 1973. But I guess even Liberace knew when to turn off the bubble machine. Or maybe that was Lawrence Welk? But I digress. My point is that I thought I had a point there for a minute. Here it comes again: We’re still holding it together with chewing gum and sheer desire. And we’re out there kicking high and wide, far and near. With shows and songs we’ve never even played before we’re dying to play for you.

Don’t back out now.

Come out come out whoever you are!

Love and hisses and broken fingers,

C

Love and kisses and broken fingers…

I’ve been thinking about a lot of weird stuff lately: Like how much Betty Ford accomplished in her life. And how people that are “into real estate” creep me out a little; and how weird people get about Raiders football. And how I’m always surprised when people say, “we should probably get some gas” when there’s still like an eighth of a tank. But mostly, I’ve been thinking about how much fun this new Stephanie Finch and the Company Men video is: http://tinyurl.com/3hjdmmb

We’ve got shows to announce too (in no particular order). First off, this weekend is Crockett and Santa Rosa. Next, we’re playing two nights during the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in SF at the Make Out Room. As usual, we’ve got a few friends in from out of town, so we thought we’d offer a warm dry place to come and have a beverage and hear some music. I just talked to Luther Dickinson who will come down and play and I’m sure we’ll run into some other friends headed this way to come down. It’s an early show. As in 7:00 PM early.

Save this date: a Save KUSF Benefit at the Rickshaw on Oct. 21 Battlehooch & Chuck Prophet (with special guest Roy Loney)

Merchville: We’ve got a new DVD: Chuck Prophet And The Spanish Bombs Live DVD. The Spanish Bombs recorded this show live for Basque Radio Television and it’s pretty slick. http://www.bellesound.com/music

Got some solo shows coming up too. Gonna play some new songs. Or maybe they’ll play me. We’ll see. See you down at the swimming hole, campers.

All the best (and all the rest),

WEST MEMPHIS THREE FREED!

WEST MEMPHIS THREE FREED!

PRESS RELEASE:

Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley were freed today from prison after serving eighteen years for being wrongfully convicted in the murder of three children in 1993.

****

More than a few prayers were answered yesterday. I watched the live press conference live on the innerweb. It was a very emotional, joyful day. To think that these guys were locked away as teenagers and grew up in an an ugly hostile and violent environment for crimes they did not commit for 18 years. Chew on that.

I wish I could have been in AR. The sun is inside me burning to see Damien, Jessie and Jason set free.

Jason expressd how unhappy he was having to admit guilt to get Damien off death row. But the state pissed on them. It’s up to them to honor their own lives. Each OTHERS lives. And they’re doing it. And as Damien said, “It’s not perfect.” Jason said, “This was not justice. In the beginning we told nothing but the truth. We were innocent, and they sent us to prison for the rest of our lives.”

It was very touching to see these guys who haven’t been in a room together since 1993 smiling. To see Jason reach out and hug Jessie and Damien - so ready to show affection and love. Such a gentle soul. When asked, “What now?”, Jason said he’s ready to get the hell out of there and live his life too. “The best I can”.

8:30 pm

For this gig, Ill be playing all new songs for a new record coming down the pike.

The working title is Temple Beautiful, the name of a long gone venue on Geary St. right between the Fillmore and the storefront church of one Reverend Jim Jones.

In a futile attempt to capture lightning bugs in a bottle and set them free, we’ve worked up a batch of songs all about San Francisco. Specials guests include Roy Loney and others (as we get our act together).

It’s all in there. Jack London to Mark Twain, from the Grateful Dead to the DK’s.

Songs include Emperor Norton in the Last Year of his Life to Willie Mays (Is Still Swinging for the Fence) to Trying to Get a Cab on a Saturday night

Characters include Laughing Sal, Fillmore Slim to Carlos Guitarlos…

The Rickshaw is a pretty cool place. Added bonus: (for those of you with wheels), it’s not so hard to park around there. Pretty easy in fact.

Yours,

C
