Fuji Apple Salad content

Like a lot of people I have a band and I’m trying to get you to come to a show [and there are many shows coming up]. So there.

And if you don’t want to come to a show? Well, that’s okay too. Because in the immortal words of Jonathan Richman: “There’s lots of other fun stuff to do.”

Can’t argue with that. What else? Is everyone having a nice summer? Ours has been pretty rad, so thanks for asking… In fact, we’re just coming off a long(ish) run and we had a ball. We had some great shows. The Green River Fest was a hang and a half. We played two shows over two days. One bells out electric show and then a show in a tent with a string quartet. It was acoustic all the way. But the crowd was pretty damned electric.

As I write this, I’m logging some alone time behind the wheel of the ol’ Econoline, zigzagging my way back to Home Base. Playing a couple solo shows on the way. [Kansas City, Salt Lake City.]

Every time I come home from one of these runs, I’m like, “Man, I should learn to knit or take up watercolor painting or something…”

Thanks for everyone who came out. And special thanks to Stephie’s mom who gave me a Panera Bread gift card for my birthday. My Panera Fuji Apple Salad content is way over the legal limit.

And hey, if you like this newsletter and want to support it, forward it to a friend.

Right on,

guitar swap

Folks,

We had a ball doing a couple dates with the Pretenders, but now we’re headed out for a mess of headline gigs all over creation.

I’m not sure where the Pretenders gigs came from. I like to think word got back to Chrissie after I showed up at her vegan restaurant in Akron and in an homage to Yogi Bear and Boo Boo ordered “everything on the menu twice.”

You know the drill, sometimes it’s a struggle to find something decent to eat on the road… And, although the band was staying at some greasy motel in Cleveland, I was visiting a radio station in Akron. I knew a little detour on the way back would make me some kind of hero. Or more to the point: who doesn’t want to instantly be in Stephanie Finch’s good graces?

After they bagged up two of everything on the menu, I raced back to that motel in Cleveland and walked through that door and threw that veggie score on the bed. You know, like the guy in that Springsteen song: “She’ll see this time I wasn’t just talking/Then I’m gonna go out walking.”

I don’t remember what all I ordered, but the thing that sticks with me is the peanut butter pupusas. That was an adventure.

The gigs were a joy ride. And Chrissie and The Pretenders were on top of their game. In fact, as soon as Stephanie heard James Walbourne play guitar she turned to me and said, “Chuck! Now THAT is a sound! How is James Walbourne getting that sound? Why can’t YOU get that sound?”. I said, “I’ll take a peak at his pedal-board and see what I can do.” After checking it out I came to the conclusion that his tone was coming out of his fingers. I told Stephie as much and she pleaded, “Are you sure, Chuck? Are you sure there isn’t ANYTHING you can do?”.

After I let that soak in, I started thinking about an idea for a reality show called Guitar Swap. Imagine a cable TV reality show where cameras follow two guitarists from different bands as they trade gigs and instruments for the summer. Is that something that would interest you? The guitar players would spend the first week following each other’s detailed instructions on how loud to play, how to socialize and behave around the merch table. Things change on the second week when they are allowed to impose their own rules and run things as they please. At the end of the two weeks, the guitar players and their bandmates meet for what promises to be a heated discussion, assessing each other’s choices and the effect the experiences had on their bands. Week three might involve adultery or picking fight’s with each other’s siblings just for fun. By the end of the summer everybody’s in group therapy we find out who has decided to quit Facebook but not why.

This tour is bound to be a scorcher. Thanks for being on this list. You make it all possible, and beautiful. We may not act like it but we’re lucky.

Meet me in the ladies room, I’ll be washing my best shirt in the sink!

Onwards,

- CP

SUMMER TIME Gigs

Folks,

Hey, speaking of merchandise. We had such a ball touring with the Bottle Rockets, and before we ink a deal with Overstock.com, we want to give you opportunity to own a commemorative Chuck Prophet/Bottle Rockets poster. Our man John Wiseman at Ocho Loco made each and every one by hand with loving care.

Memories fade, love dies, but an Ocho Loco poster lasts forever. And yes, they make great gifts. Only $25.00. It’s probably too late for Christmas, but if you buy one today we’ll gift wrap it at no additional cost. I’ll even make it easy for you.

Check out the poster and place your order here: http://www.bellesound.com/shop_9.html

Speaking of merch table memories, lately I’ve been a little off my game and there have been times Stephie says, “Maybe you could skip going out there tonight?” And I’m all… “Yeah, but I just bought a new Sharpie.” “Yeah,” she says, “but I’m not sure you’re really helping things so much.” So I put my Sharpie away and update my Instagram backstage.

Here’s some highlights of recent comments:

“So, would you consider doing a Green on Red reunion?”

“I like to buy the records straight from the artist. So they can get the money. Plus, you guys are getting hosed by all the damned illegal downloading, right?”

“Do you take Discover?”

Then there’s the guy who came up with a Green On Red LP from 1985. Wanted a signature. Dan Stuart has already scrawled “This man has no chin” and drawn an arrow pointing towards Chris Cacavas’s picture. I take out my Sharpie and pull the cap off with my teeth. Holding the cap in my mouth I write under Dan’s image: “This man has in excess of three chins at last count.” I snap the cap back on the Sharpie and walk away feeling pretty good.

Green On Red was never an organization for sensitive people. Insults were our preferred mode of communication. Collectors aren’t happy until they have the whole band’s collective signature. They track us down at obscure gigs. House parties in South Dakota.

Then a woman. Always the women. “Is there something going on between you and the girl playing the keyboard…” Yes, I confess, we’ve started dating.

Bring on the Career Consultants: “Tell your manager you should play at the Bait and Tackle Store. Or at Cake Counter. Those are the places everyone goes.”

Oh and, here comes the guy whose phone I confiscated during the show. I grabbed it like a monkey grabs food. He wants to apologize. “I was only trying to send a picture to a sick friend in New Zealand who couldn’t make the show.” He’s having too much fun now to stop.

An old drummer friend shows up and starts in about his new gig. I say, “That sounds cool.” And he says, “Yes, it’s good. I have nothing to complain about. I’m blessed. Real blessed, Chuck.”

Maybe I’m blessed too, but don’t know it.

Backstage, Instagram updated, I pick up a magazine and pretend to read it. Stephie is raking in the merch dosh hand over fist (I like to imagine), and everyone else is on their phones.

I know you’re reading this thinking I’m some kind of asshole. (Please don’t write and tell me which kind.) Hey, I have gratitude. Hell, people give me gifts. Chocolates and things. So I guess I am blessed after all.

There I said it.

Sometimes I don’t know what to say to people. I mean, I’d be lost without them. Parking cars and washing dishes… or worse, go back to taking college classes. So, thanks guys. If you’re reading this. I love you.

Plus it was a pretty healthy night. The Merch seller the club provided so Stephie could go eat her salad pressed a stack of sweaty 20’s into my hands. #No filter. #Blessed. . . .

Onwards,

-CP
