Still play’n after all these years!

Howdy Chuck: Just cought a rerun of Austin City Limits featuring your band and Jonny Lang. Outstanding show! I followed your Green on Red years, but then lost touch. Glad to hear you're still belting out the music! Your former "Body Guard" (at many a party when your mouth got ahead of your mind)

Cafe Du Nord - San Francisco Last Night

The Cafe du Nord show was all tight upbeat energy. All good vibes and smiling. A positively happy show. This was not a show of ballads and sensitive meandering of the heart: This was a night of rock and roll. Maybe it was the proximity to home, maybe it was Mom and Dad and Sis being in the audience, maybe it was the new urban cowboy shirt with the silver thread - I don't know; but man, it was an all-energy Sunday night revival session with the right Reverend Charles and the New Gospel Express. [OK, one soft moment of genuine truth: Chuck and Stephie at the mic together again for a lovely "Heart Breaks." The audiences was in tears.] The set was pretty much the standard for these past few months - Styrofoam, Homemade Blood (with that killer psychedelic lead in), Age of Miracles (the rock and roll version), What Can You Tell Me, Diamond Jim, West Memphis (greatly opened up to guitar magic), You Did, neo-Summertime Thing, Heart Breaks, I Bow Down (family-friendly version), Primo (primo Primo), Elouise (these two songs seem to be joined at the hip), Just to See You Smile; Encore: Automatic Blues (with Stephie's electronica-extravaganza opener) and Solid Gold to end it. The band was as tight as ever; great to hear K.T.'s melodic bass - he adds so much to the texture and color of the CP sound. You know, when you hear that bubble bass burst running up the back side of a downhill chord or dancing in the open space between the bridge and the chorus.... There was great work by all - I overheard someone say that this was the tightest they've ever seen the band. It was a good show and hopefully they'll play a few more dates in the hometown and break out a few old tunes and string together a few new patterns of possibilities. If you don't know it, the Cafe du Nord is a small underground club in the old Swedish Hall - a great place in the upper Market neighborhood of San Francisco. It's a great club with a fabulous sound system. It has a great old wooden bar that had been shipped around the Horn in the late 1800's. There are a number of open wall areas, breaking up the space to make it a welcome place to hang out. The opening act, Bob Forrest, was an odd fellow who sang sad songs of lost love and heroin addiction while entertaining us with stand-up comedy-like tales of his dysfunctional life. It was unique.
