Green on Red: wot? no wrestlers?!?

The guys put on a great show at the Astoria last night. The venue is a dive, but a much bigger dive than Chuck would usually play in the UK. Must've been weird to actually have roadies and guitar techs and suchlike around! Sound was excellent, though. We arrived about 15 mins before Green on Red hit the stage – after an appropriately Mexican dinner - and so ended up in the top tier, sitting in a booth. More comfortable than being in the crush, but felt a little bit far out and impersonal (as opposed to up close and…). Dan was very peeved that his plan to bring fetish wrestling to open the party had crashed and burned, but the music more than made up for it. The setlist, from what I remember, was close to (or precisely) the Arizona show (see below). Dan had a music stand - for the lyrics, presumably. Not sure why the Snakes album was ignored, and I was personally holding out for best-riff-Keith-never-wrote rocker “Gold on the Graveyard”, but I guess the set was built instead around the releases before Chris Cacavas' departure. Dan looked in really good shape, sang like a demon, and even played some Neil Young style guitar for The Drifter. Chris played some great keys, rhythm section was good and solid. Chuck still looked like The Kid up there (in a good way), but his guitar-work has had nearly 20 years to mature. His solos were frequently astounding – I guess it shouldn't be that surprising, but he's always a long stretch better than I'm anticipating. It was cool to hear the Prophet-patented style applied to the old GonR songs, though. It certainly gave them an extra kick. Chuck also seemed to be keeping things on track, switching on Dan's guitar, or checking his volume or something, and keeping things moving, maintaining the groove. I felt that things meandered just a tad during the encores, seemed to me that maybe Dan's concentration was lapsing a bit, and the others were left to mark time a little, but they closed with a highlight – That's What Dreams. Perfect end to a rocking strut down memory lane. Not sure if they were selling the DVD at the show, it was chaos trying to get out. I am hoping Chuck may have some on the back of his scooter for the solo tour. Otherwise, the place to go seems to be http://www.brink.com/product/25 for the item - I am assuming this is going to be Region 1, NTSC, but I'm not sure. Maybe there will be more info on the site. Looking forward to the Borderline show and maybe Leicester before that if I can sneak out without my wife and kids noticing I'm gone for the 270 mile round trip. Hmm.
