DortmundImagine taking a plane from Paris to Dortmund. Imagine the cold Germany (14°F). Imagine a small hall with very few people, drinking beer and smoking. Imagine a singer, alone on a chair, with his guitar, two mics and a drum-machine. That would be a very boring evening! But when the singer's name is Chuck Prophet, this bad impression fades. He has four hands to play guitar (It's so easy, compared with us who only have two and so few fingers on each), he has two mouthes and ten different voices, and finaly he cheats: he uses his two feet to play music. He "is" a band and the songs you thought to know through and through sound so different and so beautiful... So please Chuck, several ideas : - record one of these concerts. - next time, take Stephanie with you! - next time, come in France 5It's so cold in Germany!). Thank you very much, Chuck. |

CPS&WHavin' seen Cuck's show in Langenau/Germany (with Chris Cacavas on keyboards) and reminding the trip to London in early January to the Astoria Theatre I just imagine a kind of new band (in alphabetical order): C, P, S & W. Like back then C, S, N & Y, they could do their own brand of "Four Way Street". Could be the Greatest Band on Earth, the missing link we all might need. Think oft it. |

Upcoming CP and Aimee Mann show in MDKicking myself b/c I'm a huge fan of both artists and didn't buy tix in time and they sold out! I always see CP when he's in the Annapolis area. Long shot I realize but thought I'd post a message just in case someone knew a way I could still get a ticket...(CP and co. if you read this I'm the "Trader Joe's girl") |

Borderline showFantastic show in London tonight. Chuck always seems very much at home at the Borderline. Host Barry introduced him as "the best fucking guitarist in the world" at least twice (much to CP's embarrassment!). I was surprised to read Billy the Kid (posting about the Wolv show) was underwhelmed by the choice of equipment: I loved hearing the new set-up, and found the new arrangements of familiar songs really fascinating. Plus I found myself listening to the lyrics much more closely in this setting, and marveling at Chuck's Dylanesque wordplay in the likes of "Rise". Lots of slow-burning, rumbly grooves happening, and the whole sound generally struck me as very swampy and bluesy. New track "Jesus was a Social Drinker" is a keeper. "New Year's Day" was a highlight for me, beautiful, emotional version. Just before the encore, Chuck got us clapping in sync, and he broke out a familiar guitar solo I can't place, but it sounded Shadows-y. I'm sure someone else will put me right on that. Of the support acts, Sarah Sharp was nice, Caroline Herring really good, Corb Lund was pretty cool, but I imagine he's better with a band, and I think Todd Snider (whom he namechecked) does this kinda thing better. All IMHO, of course. Had a quick word with Chuck afterwards and he mentioned that this equipment tends to be his setup for songwriting, which explained a lot for me - about the show, but also about the direction the studio recordings have taken since "Hurting Business". Chuck, if you're reading this, thanks again for such a great show, and let me know what you make of those CDs. And next time, fill me in on the full McDill story.... :-) Stevie |

Solo Chuck at WolverhamptonHaving not seen Chuck since the promotion of "Homemade Blood" with his full band, this was an unusual sight. Chuck sitting on chair, accompanied by a drum machine, two mics ( one heavily soaked in a kind of gate effect and the other in natural) whilst playing a non-telecaster guitar was different to say the least. The Sound from the small stage projected around the room really well once a technical problem with the mics was sorted out. Whoever was in charge of playing the music over the p.a. during the changeover from the support act to chuck could have chosen more appropiate music for the event...if i can recall we got treated to a version of "i need a hero" by bonnie tyler, except it was sung by some guy in heavy rock fashion!....eeeeeew!. it was even playing again when chuck came back on for his encore at the end and the look on chuck's face wasn't exactly filled with "i must buy this record" delight as the engineer struggled to turn the load of bollocks off!. As for Chuck's performance, it was solid and entertaining for what it was but after the first four or so numbers i was starting to miss the rest of the band. the drum machine was starting to get irritating towards the end and tracks such as "After the Rain" and "Whole lot More" "Run Primo Run" didn`t really work for me. This is not to say that i only like chuck when he's playing in a full band, the acoustic three piece set up that i've seen him do in the past with stephanie on accordian etc is excellent. One thing that hasn`t changed since i last saw Chuck is the way he can entertain a crowd with his little stories in between songs...he`s still a great "live" act for sure. Looking forward to seeing him again sometime soon, just hope it he gets the acoustic out and leaves the drum machine behind next time if he can't play with the full band..... |

Chuck@Wolverhampton Little CivicChuck said he had come "to put Wolverhampton on the map" and didn't disappoint with a great set and some fine tales, set included: New years day Whole lot more Rise Diamond jim Lucky After the rain I bow down... Run primo run Storm across the sea Summertime thing Just to see you smile (Kim Carnes style) West memphis moon Solid gold No expectations Jesus was a social drinker & a couple of others I forget. I had to rush off at the end but thought I saw 'As seen on TV' back on sale - have they done another run? |

Chuck @ NottinghamTo me the mark of a great artist is if they can still entertain and hold an audience spellbound all on their own.At Nottingham the other night Chuck did just that.No mystical Tele,no Blackface Fender vintage valve amp,no bespoke pedal board,no stellar cast of supporting musicians, just one man and a few hundred bucks of pawnshop gear. I've long since realised that tone and soul came from within. From the fingers, from the heart.Chuck Prophet solo is living proof of that theory.Way to go fella. Do not miss your opportunity to witness such greatness at close proximity......and spend generously at the Merch stand please! |
