all great Mexican parties end with crying

Welcome back. First of all, I had a ball with the Twin Tones. It was a hell of an adventure. A tour of Mexico I will not be forgetting any time soon. Great guys. And thanks especial to their manager Monica who found me an excellent dental surgeon down there. Although he spoke very very little English he *seemed* to know what he was doing. We didn’t communicate much but for some reason he wanted me to know he’s an Eric Clapton fan. “Er-eeek Clap-tone” I wasn’t sure how that was supposed to make me feel. Honestly, I was a feeling slightly on edge. For one thing, I was a little taken aback when they took me to where I was to get the surgery and it was set up in someone’s house. But the whole procedure went swimmingly (pass the antibiotics please!) and I’d recommend it to anyone trapped in the money belt. And really; I’d forgotten how awesome it is to chew out of both sides of my mouth.

All just in time for our Fall Tour which kicks off in SF at the MakeOut Room/ and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Fest where we’ll be doing our last Strings in the Temple Show before we fold up the tent on that. Then it’s over the pond to the UK. [Little Chef fried egg sarnies, anyone?]. Anyway, before we head out of here, one more a big thanks to all the fellows in the Twin Tones for an unforgettable experience. They say that all great Mexican parties end with crying and ours was no different. Great memories. Great playing. And even greater tacos. [Stands to reason, you know. There’s a lot of competitions down there for tacos when you think about it]. One of my favorite memories from the tour is driving across the desert with Johnny Cash blaring out of the dashboard. I asked Israel if he knew the words to Ring Of Fire. He said he’d love to know the words but every time he hears that song he breaks down and starts crying like baby.

So there you have it.

Oh by the way, dig this: The Twin Tone’s keyboardist. Is it just me, or does this guy look really familiar?

New record. Yes, we’ve got a new record. Sept. 23 is the official release date of Night Surfer. You knew about that, right? Here’s more deets: Night Surfer is now available for pre-order via the Yep Roc Store. The CD/LP pre-order includes an instant download of “Wish Me Luck,” and features exclusive merch bundles with the official T-shirt, autographed print, and button.

Also, for our friends on the other side of the pond: Chris Metzler wants me to mention that we’ve got a new 7” single coming down the pike in early October but shipping Sept 12th via http://decorrecords.com (Yep Roc will also have some stock for the US)

Speaking of the other side of the pond, myself and the INCOMPARABLE Mission Express (of course) have a bunch of new October Euro dates to announce which are followed by an extended foray into the eastern reaches of this great continent in November. So find your town on the list below and mark those calendars. We’d love to see you. We’ve missed you. It’s time for you to hit the road, Jackson, and let the PEERLESS Mission Express address the perennial question: What do you do when the road hits back? ANSWER: Hit it HARDER.

But prior to all that, as mentioned above, we’re playing the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in Golden Gate Park on Oct. 5th preceded by two nights at the Make Out Room in San Francisco. The Make Out Room shows start early. Like, we hit the stage at 7 PM. For real. You’ve been warned.

Yessir: So here we go. Back on the treadmill. I love it. Every Happy Eater fried sanny along the way is magic. What else am I gonna do? At least I’m halfway good at it. That feels good. That feels okay. (And on a personal note, nobody has a better band)

On my way to the “Big Shitty”

Coming to you live 30,000 feet above Atlanta, GA. On my way to the “Big Shitty”. Yep, Mexico City. Only 2 hours by plane but might as well be the other side of the moon. I’m heading down there to play some shows backed by The Twin Tones. And in full disclosure, I need to get some dental work done. And it’s a good chance to do that outside the “money belt”. Startup City, USA takes a toll on a man.

Last time I was in Mexico City we were recording ¡Let Freedom Ring! amidst brown-outs, CNN swine flu hysteria, 6.4 earthquakes and shakedowns by the policia. This time ought to be a little more chill. But, don’t mistake the laid back vibe down there for anything other than what it is. The place bustles. There’s juice in the air down there and it’s all you can drink. Really looking forward to playing with the great Twin Tones. [Late notice, I know. But that’s how they roll]. So, I think I have an idea of the dates now. (Listed below). Maybe some of you can Uber a private jet or something.

Meanwhile you can go over to Yep Roc now and preorder Night Surfer http://bit.ly/1odYys1

—Instant download of “Wish Me Luck”
